DEPARTURE & PARKING

The Big Rove is NOT a mass start event or a race. Riders should leave between 7 AM and 9 AM. On your maps, note the times the services will end in communities. All services will end by 7 PM. There will be a lot of people riding on the trail, so take your time and enjoy the event. Be safe.

Parking will be available at the Johnson County Administration Building (913 S Dubuque St, Iowa City, IA) or at the ramp in the Johnson County Health and Human Services Building (855 S Dubuque St, Iowa City, IA).  If parking in the ramp, drive through the raised gates onto the upper level.  It is a short bike ride through Riverside Park on the trail.  There is also overflow parking at the old City Carton lot at the corner of Benton & Madison.  Signs will be posted for bike event parking.

SAFETY

The Big Rove is going to be a fun event, but most of all, we want the ride to be safe. We depend on you, as a participant, to be aware of others on the trail. This could be the first time many riders have participated in a group event. Be aware of where other riders are around you. Communicate your movements out loud to riders around you. If you are stopping or slowing, say it. If there is a crossing ahead, announce it. If you are turning, use hand signals and announce the turn. Yield to other traffic. If you need to stop, do it off the trail. Wear a helmet. Enjoy the ride and be safe.

All Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, and policies apply to the participants in this event.  Please participate in a safe, courteous, and respectful manner.

ROUTE

We will publish a link to a Ride with GPS map soon.  The majority of the route will follow the Dubuque Street Trail to North Liberty. We will be using Capitol Street, Prentis Street, and Madison Street through Iowa City on the way out of town. There is construction in North Liberty, so we are working with the city to determine the best option through town.  After North Liberty, we are brand new trail to the Mehaffey Bridge and then we travel paved shoulders to 180th Street, turn on Racine Avenue, and then Hwy 382 directly to the Brewery in Solon.  The tenative map (minus construction detour) is at https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30057823

SAG and SUPPORT

We will SAG service free of charge to registered (wristband) riders who are broken down mechanically or physically.  SAG will stop at designated areas near the food stop and bike shop in towns at the time of service closure.  Please remember SAG is not “on call” service. Riders with non-traditional bike frames (tandems and trike recumbents) may need to consider alternate plans for bike transport. You cannot call the number to request a ride.  When the SAG is full, they will return to the start in Iowa City.  SAG cannot pick up riders on the trail.  If you have an emergency, call 911.
